Paintball and Kings Island.... for FREE?!

When you are trying to figure out where to spend the next four years of your life, a wise question to ask is what activities or trips are available outside of the classroom.  Tusculum offers over 70 different clubs and organizations for students to participate in outside of varsity sports and academics.  Getting involved with clubs and organizations have numerous pay-offs.  Not only do you get the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships; you also can participate in some pretty amazing trips FOR FREE!

To give you an idea of what kind of free activities Tusculum students have been participating in, all we have to do is look to the Department of Freshmen Services.  This year Brandon Conner, Director of Freshmen Services, has already taken a group of freshmen on two pretty cool trips.  On October 1, his group spent the afternoon engaged in an intense paintball competition at Smokey Mountain Paintball.  This Saturday a group of new students are going to King’s Island in Cincinnati, Ohio.  They are looking forward to all the excitement that one of the nation’s top amusement parks has to offer.   I hope you consider asking about some of the other amazing trips that are available for Tusculum Students.

An Exciting Time at Tusculum...

It's been an exciting few weeks on the Tusculum College campus! Our admission staff has been keeping the roads hot, traveling to different high schools and college fairs over the past month. You may have seen us in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and of course Tennessee!

In other news, we welcomed our largest incoming class on record this year, with 404 new students attending Tusculum! We're excited to see new faces on campus, and have a hum of activity all around!

Last but certainly not least, Tusculum inducted its first female President this past Friday. Dr. Nancy B. Moody is the 27th president of Tusculum. We look forward to her leadership in the days ahead!

Tusculum Student's Artwork on Display at General Morgan Inn

Tusculum College student Tylan Adams,  a senior graphic design major from Greeneville, will be featured in a solo art show beginning September 2, at the Mason House Gallery located in the General Morgan Inn in Downtown Greeneville.

The show will consist of an eclectic collection of her undergraduate works. Adams will display several drawings in charcoal and pastel, oil paintings and graphic design projects completed during her study at Tusculum College.

“No matter how much I get to know my own style, I never know how a finished piece is going to turn out,” says Adams.  “Comparing a finished piece to its model is most rewarding.  They never look the same, and the art is usually substantially more interesting.  If I could learn to automatically foresee the way I draw, the world would be exceedingly entertaining.”

Adams was this year’s recipient of the Greeneville Arts Council’s Mary Jane Coleman scholarship.

Tusculum College named to Top Military-Friendly School List


Tusculum College has been named to G.I. Jobs’ 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.

Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

“Tusculum College has a long history of providing programs that allow the adult student to be able to achieve their dream of higher education while balancing the responsibilities of career and family,” said Jacquelyn D. Elliott, vice president for enrollment management at Tusculum College.

”The Military Friendly Schools list is the gold standard in letting veterans know which schools will offer them the greatest opportunity, flexibility and overall experience. It’s especially important now with so many schools competing for military students,” said Derek Blumke, president of Student Veterans of America and a member of the list’s Academic Advisory Board.

Schools on the Military Friendly Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.

Tusculum College started the Yellow Ribbon program in August 2009. Under the program, the school matches dollars put in by the Veterans Administration so veterans can work toward their advanced degree as well as qualify for money to help with housing. There are already more than 20 students enrolled in Tusculum degree programs who are receiving the Yellow Ribbon benefits.

“The Yellow Ribbon program allows the College to further fulfill her mission by acknowledging the service and commitment of those who have served our country by providing them with financial support to complete their education.” said Tusculum College President Dr. Nancy B. Moody. “With the variety of locations, programs, majors, degrees and scheduling options offered at Tusculum College, we are uniquely suited to serve those whose educational path was interrupted or who are considering beginning or continuing their higher education.”

The Yellow Ribbon program is applicable towards all Tusculum College degree programs, which include traditional undergraduate programs, as well as the Graduate and Professional Studies programs. Tuition benefits under the program are also available to both full and part-time students.

In addition, Tusculum College has a long standing relationship with United States Navy through its partnership with the U.S.S. Greeneville submarine. Since its christening, Tusculum College has partnered with the crew members, offering an annual scholarship to crewmen and/or members of their family. To date, three people benefiting from that relationship have become Tusculum College alumni and one more has applied to attend next year.

Tusculum College has long offered assistance to veterans returning to higher education and Veterans Affairs Coordinator Pat Simons is available to specifically support veterans with their admissions and financial aid questions. The G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School List was compiled through exhaustive research starting last April during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators from Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Colorado State University, Dallas County Community College, Old Dominion University, Cleveland State University, Lincoln Technical Institute and Embry Riddle.

Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.

Tusculum Chorus begins a new year....

The Tusculum College Community Chorus begins rehearsals on Monday, August 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the choir room, room 46 on the lower lever of the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Building. The chorus is open to all interested singers; no audition is required. David Hendricksen is the conductor and Jim Winfree is accompanist.

Tusculum students may register for the chorus for 1 semester credit: MUSC 192.

The concert will take place on Monday, December 13. Our repertoire includes one large work -- Psalm 95 by Felix Mendelssohn. Though originally in German, we will sing this work in English. Other music on the program will be variety of seasonal music from various countries.

On The Road... Again!

What an exciting week for Tusculum College! We have witnessed our record setting largest entering class of 400 new students converge on campus. After a week of enjoying the fruits of our labor, the admission office is ready to start running the roads of the southeast region with even higher expectations for next year’s entering class!

For the next three months, admission representatives will be coming to your high schools, area malls, and civic centers. Starting next week, we will have representatives in Middle and East Tennessee high schools. If you go to a school at or near Warren County, Cherokee High, Hickman High, East Hickman High, Daniel Boone High, Perry County High, Lewis County, Tri-Cities, Giles County, Lawrence County, and Sullivan East High, a Tusculum representative will be coming to you next week. So, take some time and stop by our table and ask us about what distinguishing factors Tusculum has to offer. We look forward to seeing you soon.
